New Insights on Race Driving
and Suspension Set-Up
WHO KNOWS WHAT'S HAPPENING AT THE TYRES??
UNTIL NOW, JUST HOW TYRE SLIP ANGLE CREATES THE ROTATION MOTION OF THE RACE CAR HAS NOT BEEN EXPLAINED TO RACING DRIVERSÂ
Hey, Racing Car Driver... If you're not crystal clear in your mind how you FEEL the ROTATION MOTION of the race car then this can directly impact on....
-
Your confidence in driving at the limit
-
Your feedback, especially in relation to the car balance for U/S O/S
-
Your ability in setting up the race car suspension
 Â
By learning exactly how you feel what the race car is doing and the insights that flow from this, you can transform how you think about your race driving and your suspension set-up.
Want to learn more about set-up? You need a holistic view of race driving. But where is the pathway to do this?
It comes down to getting the right mindset to help you feel what the race car is doing before you can properly understand the suspension set-up you have on the car now. In this training, you'll learn our easy to implement process where you can analyze suspension set-up problems and then learn and adapt set-up procedures you can use over and over again in making you and your race car faster.
GET EDUCATEDYOU MAY FEEL IT'S IMPOSSIBLE TO KNOW HOW RACE CAR HANDLING WORKS... BUT THERE IS HOPE
You Can Create in Your Mind a Complete Picture of Race Car Handling
Learn the simple race car dynamics behind your feel for the rotation motion of the race car. Here's a quick overview of the key concepts:
- Intellectually, all drivers should relate to the importance of rotation in driver control of the race car. But the finer detail of driver feel and exactly how rotation of the chassis happens due to tyre slip angle has not been revealed to racing drivers before.
- You can get this understanding with just the right amount of theory about race car dynamics, as I show you in this training.Â
- This knowledge is vitally important in building your mindset and confidence around driving the race car at the limit of grip and your feeling for balance for u/s o/s.
-
Driver feel for balance can be best thought of in terms of the driver feeling the car rotating faster or slower.
-
Oversteer
The car feels nervous, too agile, too willing to turn.
-
Understeer
The car feels too stable, unwilling to turn as the driver would like.
-
The Role of Tyre Slip Angle
The driver's main feel for car balance comes from the rear tyre slip rotating the chassis an amount equal to the rear tyre slip angle only. The front tyre slip angle results in the driver turning the steering wheel a little further into the corner. The driver does not notice this. Nothing for the driver to feel. (For confirmation of this concept, see "Race Car Vehicle Dynamics", Milliken and Milliken, page 131)
-
Excellent Driver Feedback is Paramount
Many racing drivers respond automatically to what the race car is doing and are unaware of the finer detail of the race car balance. This new know-how allows you better visualize what you're feeling from the car, so you can give better feedback to your team, leading you to better decisions on the suspension set-up.

NICE TO MEET YOU
I'm Dale Thompson
I'm an engineer, graduating with my BE(Sc) from the UNSW and working for 10 years with BMC/BLMC in Australia.
After many years circuit racing in a number of grassroots categories, I started Racing Car Technology in 1998, with my mate and co-founder, Neville Smith.
Rather than just general race car preparation, we saw an opening in the amateur racing marketplace for a specialty suspension set-up service. with a strong technical focus. Â We did a lot of suspension set-ups, gaining seconds improvement in lap time for our clients, working from our little workshop at Batemans Bay on the South Coast of NSW and testing at the Wakefield Park racetrack at Goulburn.
Starting out, we did not expect anyone to pay us for a lot of trial-and-error testing. So, we developed our Racing Car Technology Weight Transfer Worksheet (WTW). We could use the WTW to get a baseline set-up in the workshop, knowing that we could have the car in the set-up window before we got to the track.
In tandem with our hands-on setups, from 2000 onwards, I started teaching race car dynamics on my website and doing 1:1 consulting in set-up. Â
That was the beginnings of the holistic approach to racing I show you in my “Science of Race Car Driving and Suspension Set-Up” group training today.
"The light bulb came on for me and I will be looking at my driving as well as car setup in a new light from now on.Â
For the first time I actually understand how and why I feel the car the way I do and can actually explain what happens as the result of my inputs.
This is the best money I have ever spent on racing.
Thank you!”
- Gordon Kinney
"I cannot thank the guys at Racing Car Technology enough. Their approach may seem a little unconventional, but the bottom line is it works. The base setup they gave us for testing was a lot different to the direction the team was going with the car. But we were on the money straight off. For the first time, we had a balanced car that responded to adjustment.
- Peter and James Burge
" The theories proposed in this training have given me new insights into how the driver interprets what the race car is doing and how he reacts to it. My driver has learned what he is feeling and a context and vocabulary to communicate it. Now we've got the tools to do a predictable setup in the shop and a format to test that will quickly bring car and driver up to speed"
